“Chick Trucks” for large SA logistics company

Serco has built three specialised trucks – and is working on a further two – for the transport of day-old chicks.

The trucks were ordered by Bloemfontein-based Hestony Transport which was established in 1987 with just one truck to its name – today it boasts a fleet of more than 650 vehicles!

The company specialises in transporting refrigerated and agricultural goods to all major SADC countries including Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique.  It offers customised solutions for the beverage, meat, fish, poultry, dairy, and sweets and confectionary industries.

General Manager of Serco’s Johannesburg factory Charl Coetzee said another three trucks were built for Hestony earlier this year bringing to eight the number for 2018.

Key features on the 8.3m bodies – all on 25/280 MAN chassis – include air vents, fans, and an air mixing chamber which together ensure the correct air flow for the chicks being transported.

Coetzee said the two vehicles still under construction would be delivered before the end of the year. General Manager Agri division at Hestony Rowen Smith confirmed the deals, saying his company had a long history of doing business with Serco
