Where do you find yourself as we hurtle towards the end of 2021? Physically I’m in Durban. And I’m very grateful for that. What’s not to love about living in a city like ours?
It’s warm, friendly, and there’s just about enough business to keep us going. Sure, there’re problems. There are many hot issues, locally and globally, and we can choose where to focus our attention.
2021 has been quite a year here.
Local government election results have shaken things up a bit. We were brought to our knees in July, but many new alliances were also forged in that fire. And the country’s most famous (infamous?) sequencing medical scientists are based here.
What you see depends on your perspective.
Remote working offers flexibility
Working remotely has brought more flexibility in terms of where you choose to be based. In the beginning, it was disorienting, but now so many people I speak to say they’ll never spend all that time commuting and shopping again. It’s liberating to not have to be physically present, doing things we never imagined could be done remotely.
With far fewer physical events and interactions, I find the enjoyment of them is amplified. The sights, sounds, aromas, tastes, easy company of family and friends and flowing conversation are a delicious sensory indulgence.
People are choosing their location based on things that are important to them, like WiFi speed, the cost of living, and an abundance of sun, or waves, or snow, good wine, a creative community, whatever.
SWC loves the East Coast of South Africa
For me, I’m pretty happy here on the East Coast. I’m accepting life as it comes, even if it means a cancelled trip to visit family. I am making the most of what I have and looking forward to a year of growth in 2022.
We wish you and your families much love and happiness over the holiday period and look forward to hearing from you in the New Year.
